Monitoring and logging residential temperatures

Battery operated electronic devices are now available that can monitor, record and upload a number of temperatures and humidity levels at a number of locations both inside and outside your home. This enables you to better understand your local weather, the thermal characteristics of your home, and to reduce your energy use.

Monitoring and logging residential temperatures can be made easier with a device like the La Crosse Technology wireless data logging weather station WS-8610U this can be obtained with up to 3 La Crosse Technology TX7U temperature sensors. The weather station is intended to be located indoors, it measures and records the local temperature and humidity levels and those of the remote stations every 5 minutes.

The battery powered sensors are generally located remotely, one is usually outdoors, the others are placed at desired locations around your home. The sensors transmit local temperatures and humidity levels to the main weather station every 5 minutes.

The La Crosse data logging weather station has a wireless controlled clock that is synchronized daily from an atomic clock located at Fort Collins, Colorado.

The weather station can store up to 3000 sets of readings taking care or more than 1 weeks readings. The unit is supplied with PC compatible software and a data cable permitting the data, including the time and date stamps, to be uploaded to the PC via an RS232 connection, the data can then be saved as a text file. The text file can be imported by a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel and used to make informative charts.

Much can be learned about your home from the information obtained from the La Crosse weather station. You can see how the outside and inside temperature and humidity levels change with the seasons and with time at many locations in your home and when and how long your heating and cooling systems operate.

A La Crosse weather station’s uses include: providing you with information on: the impact of changes to residential insulation levels; decreasing basement duct leakages; a comparison of whole house fan and ac system; and lifestyle changes. These will all allow you to increase your residential energy efficiency, to reduce your costs, and to make the world a better place for your descendants.

Make a difference, be energy frugal.
