Reduce residential energy use

Human inhabitants of the world contribute to global warming in widely differing degrees. The contribution by, and the responsibility for, the impact on global warming of human energy use by those in developed countries, is thousands of times greater than those that contribute the least.

Our personal contribution is dependent on the products we buy, our work, our travel, the food we eat, and the energy we use in our homes. This web site focuses on the practical steps we can take to dramatically decrease residential energy use and to halve your utility bills.

Most of us are extraordinarily wasteful from an energy perspective, partly because until recently we were unaware of the long term implications.

Decide to be energy economical, or even better, energy frugal, everyone who does will reduce residential energy use (and costs) and assist in improving the world for future generations.

To make the greatest residential energy saving we need to know where and how energy is used in our homes.

According to US Department of Energy statistics:
  •   47% of US residential energy was used for space heating, 30% for lighting, cooking and all appliances, 17% for water heating, and 6% for air conditioning.

  •   82% of US Residential fuel oil is used for space heating, and 18% for water heating.

This site identifies more than 100 things each of us can do to reduce residential energy use. A good proportion of these will cost nothing or very little, will save you money, and help the environment. Some will both cost and save you money, and help the environment. Others will cost a lot but save you less over a medium period, say 5 years, but they will help the environment.

The current average annual US household energy cost for natural gas is $1,020, for electricity $1,200, for fuel oil $1,300, for LPG $950, and for kerosene $370.

Most homes use natural gas and electricity so the total average residential energy cost is $2,200. Your efforts to reduce residential energy use and energy cost could be halved by adopting the recommendations on this web site saving on average $1,100.

Getting Started

Become energy aware and reduce residential energy use (and costs). Initially take a look at and list your past years utility bills and record the monthly or quarterly costs.

From now on every time you get a new utility bill add the cost to your list. For the greatest detail, record the daily or weekly changes in your utility meter readings, this will enable you to quickly see the impact of your efforts to reduce residential energy use.

Two relatively inexpensive and informative units, the Killawatt and the Centameter, are now available that aid you in monitoring residential electricity use, track down electricity leakage, to reduce residential energy use, and to reduce your utility bills.

In some areas of the USA electric utility companies are trialing pre-paid electricity meters. These show the amount of electricity currently being used and the accrued costs. Most consumers when armed with this information become more energy aware.

You will probably not be able to take advantage of all our energy saving suggestions, however once you incorporate those that are relevant you will dramatically reduce your utility bills by half saving probably more than $1,000 each year.

We suggest you begin by looking at the 'what can I do list' in the space heating section, which uses the most energy, and focus initially on 3 to 6 suggestions. Later look at each of the other sections in turn.

Continue to log the reduction in your utility bills, try to remove the impact of changes in the unit cost of the energy as these will mask your real achievements.

If you find the information on this web site helpful please pass it on to friends and relatives. The less energy we use the more we save and the better the world will be for future generations.
